“Forest Kindergarten!” 5/22/17-5/26/17

Above Left: students investigate what the net caught; Above Right: students explore during a scavenger hunt Bottom: Mr. Matt and Ione’s dad bring in the net

A HUGE Thank YOU to our parent volunteers on our Field Trip yesterday! I had to go home and put on my sweatpants after being out in the elements. I think the kids had fun and learned something, so that’s all that counts!

I said it was like teaching “forest kindergarten” where children go out in all kinds of weather. Sounds like fun right?

As always, Northeastern does a great job to make marine science engaging for our Kindergarten friends. Thank you NEF!

Inch by Inch, Row by Row… 5/8/17-5/12/17

We’re Going to Help Our Garden Grow!

Today the Kindergarten weeded out our plot in the Community Garden! Mr. Andrews, also known as Gardener Andrews, came out to show us how to use a trowel to pull out the weeds! We spent about 40 minutes happily “digging in the dirt!” We will be working with our sixth grade buddies to plant the “three sisters,” which are beans, corn and squash (we’ll be using pumpkins.) Click to learn more about the Three Sisters Legend.

This week we will be learning in…

It’s May?! Already?! 5/1/17 – 5/5/17

It was hard to believe today that it was already time to make our May calendars! I hope you enjoy seeing them come home each month.  Most children are now able to independently write their numbers 1-31. This is an authentic assessment of your child’s hard work over the school year.

We used construction paper scraps from another project to create our beautiful May flowers calendar toppers! We love to repurpose things for other uses. As my grandmother would say, “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!” We really try to do that with all our classroom supplies and materials. Thanks for all the donations of paper towel rolls as well, we will be using them this week for a science project. Along with the rest of the construction paper scraps!

Here’s what we are learning this week:

English/Language Arts

  • Mo Willems Author Study
  • Fundations Unit 4 Week 3: sight words, digraphs, spelling patterns with word families
  • Guided reading groups
  • Opinion writing (with evidence)

  • Number stories to 10
  • counting on to a larger number

Science

  • Parts of a Plant
