Busy, Busy Days!

It’s almost the end of another week together! We are continuing to work on building our classroom community. Today we revisited “bucket fillers and bucket dippers.” We also read a story about friendship called, A Rainbow of Friends. Often, we as adults say, “use your words” to our young friends. This statement doesn’t always help. Young children need us to model the language to use when navigating tough social situations. If you see your child having an issue with a sibling or friend at home, take the time to model appropriate ways of communicating to solve problems. Make it fun – children love role playing!

Our days seem to be getting busier as I challenge the children with more academics. This week we began Fundations, starting with the letter T. In Fundations, we focus on the learning how to write the correct lowercase letter formation first, and in the winter, will be reviewing correct uppercase letter formation. Ask your child to “sign” the letter T to you!

A typical schedule of our day.

Last week I introduced academic choice to the children. During academic choice, children all work on the same topic, but in different ways. Children have the choice about how they would like to work. Some topics we have down so far are name recognition, colors, sorting and patterning. Soon information will be coming to you about opportunities for parent volunteers during these times.

Next week will be another busy week! We are off to the apple farm on Wednesday (hope for sun!) and we will be starting a great Johnson School tradition – Kindergarten and 6th Grade buddies! I’m looking forward to it!

Have a great weekend!
Ms. Purdin 🙂

Helpful Hints

Despite all the rain this week, I’d say we’re having a great start to our school year together. Today we did some counting, learned a new song (“Have you ever gone a fishin’) and made our September self-portraits. We are continuing to practice and model procedures, and the children are beginning to follow directions more easily. After having them a few days, I have thought of a few helpful hints that will help not only me and Mrs. Clark, but your child and you too!

1. Separate your child’s lunch and snack. If each had it’s own bag or container, it would not have to be a guessing game in the morning. Many children are hungry by 9:30, and see that yummy dessert and want that instead of the healthy snack you packed.

2. LABEL EVERYTHING!!!! With so many friends, it would be most helpful if you labeled all clothing, coats, backpacks, and lunches. Sometimes the rightful owner doesn’t remember if it’s his or her belongings at the end of the day!

3. Tell your child if they are buying milk or not that day, and where you have put the money. It would be most helpful if you put milk money in the lunchbox. You can purchase for the week or month and send it in all at once if that is easier.

4. Toys and “lovies” should stay at home, not come to school.

Thank you!

And We’re Off and Running…

Our first full day together was wonderful! I am so excited to be working with all your children and ready for a joyful year of learning. They are sweet, smart and caring individuals. Today was about teaching routines and rules. We toured the school, met key personnel like the principal, Mrs. Mulcahy and Mrs. DiLisio, our school nurse. The children had lunch in the cafeteria and played outside in both our “backyard” and out on the primary playground. I introduced a few materials, crayons and floor puzzles to them as well. I open up areas slowly and introduce materials one at a time. While it takes time, it does pay off in the end, and helps with organization for the rest of the year. We will start attending P.E. and Library next week.

Mondays and Wednesdays are our P.E. days. Children need to wear sneakers!

Tuesday is our Library day.

As we move into the Labor Day weekend, I thought would give you a few helpful hints to keep the morning school routine running smoothly. (I’m sure you do many of these things already!)

  • Have your child go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
  • Choose and lay out clothes the night before.
  • Pack lunches and backpacks the night before.
  • Make sure you give your child enough time to complete morning tasks so you are not rushed.
  • No media in the morning (TV, video games, etc). Studies show these activities tire the brain and make it harder for children to stay focused during school hours.
Have a great weekend! See you on Tuesday morning!
