Frosty Temps call for Authentic Learning! 1/8/18-1/12/18

Those frigid temperatures seem to be leaving us for a bit, which is a good thing! Though when the temps go down, we turn up the learning in Kindergarten! This week we are beginning to take many of our skills we learned from the fall and put them into practice. I am already pleased by the results!

As we begin more formal reading instruction, remember, not every child walks or talks at the same time. This is a developmental process. For some, it comes quickly because of their memory and for others, it can take more direct instruction of concepts. The best help you can be is be a ROLE MODEL reader to your child and reward their successes as they begin their reading journeys.

Here’s what we are learning this week:

English/Language Arts

  • Sounding out (tapping out) CVC words
  • The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
  • Writing in our Journals

Math

  • Teen numbers, teen partners
  • describing shapes

Science

  • Changes in Water

Social Studies

  • Learner skills
  • Thinking with your eyes/empathy

Happy 2018! Week of 1/1/18-1/5/18

Welcome back! It seems like everyone had a great break and something fun to share at our Morning Meeting this morning. The bitter cold made it a bit harder to get out of bed when the alarm went off this morning, but seeing all the smiles and happy faces coming in made it better!

January is a great time to “hunker down” and get to work on our skill building from all the hard work your children did this fall. This week we will begin to work on making words, reading sight words and continuing our math numeracy skills with larger numbers as we get closer to the 100th Day of School!

STAY WARM!!!! Hopefully this cold, cold weather goes away soon!

  • Shared Reading text: The Mitten by Jan Brett
  • Fundations Unit 2 week 1
  • Introduction of CVC words (mat, cat, rug, etc.)

Snow! 12/11/17-12/15/17

It was an exciting “whip share” this morning hearing everyone’s weekend activities with the snow and other festive fun! I give every child on Mondays the chance to share one thing they did over the weekend. The other days sharing consists of one or two children who then can answer questions from their peers. Speaking and Listening are important skills in the Kindergarten curriculum.

SPEAKING of Listening, we are working hard on being first time listeners. It is December in Kindergarten, however, in order to be a safe and fun learning environment for all we need to practice good listening skills. I hope you can help with this at home with your child. Remember, a reminder is ok, but more than one reminder, and it starts to becomes a habit that they don’t have to listen the first time. 🙂

I have added more dates for Mystery Reader. You can sign up here. If you have already done so, please give a chance to others who did not. Thank you!

Here’s what we are learning this week:

English/Language Arts

  • Fundations Unit 1 Week 12 Zz, Qu,qu
  • Ending sounds in words
  • Personal narrative: A tradition I have in my family is…
  • Guided reading practice with sight words

Math

  • Capacity and Volume
  • Counting by 10s
  • Building numbers

Science/Technology

  • patterns/coding
  • changes in water

First Term Report Cards 11/27/17-12/1/17

What a great long weekend! I hope everyone had as much fun as I did visiting family and friends. This is my favorite weekend because I see old friends, have special traditions (Black Friday shopping!) and enjoy going home. 🙂 Everyone came in with smiles today sharing the things they did over the weekend. What a fun time of year for little ones!

Ms. Purdin and her friend Emily before the event with Shalane on Saturday.

Ms. Purdin did “run” into someone famous over the weekend, NYC Marathon 2017 winner Shalane Flanagan at the “Back the Track” event in Marblehead. Fun Fact: Ms. Purdin and Shalane were in the same high school class! it’s awesome to see her achieve a dream she’s had for a long time and to come back to do some good in our hometown.

Now that we are back to school, we have a month to finish the alphabet, work on math and do my favorite literature unit – The Gingerbread Man! We are also working on kindness during the month of December. I saw this great idea on Facebook, and if a certain Elf you might know is looking for something to do try this! Kindness Elves.

One last thing…Report cards come out on Friday and I am looking forward to meeting with you all next week at parent conferences. We are changing the report cards this year and they will look different from past kindergarten report cards. Please bring your questions to our meeting.
