Spring might not have sprung quite yet, but we have a bunch of writers springing up! I was pleased today working in small groups to see how many are easily sounding out words and confidently writing! What a fun spring it will be!
Here’s what we are up to this week…
English Language Arts
Ms. Kayla, our COTA, practices yoga with us before handwriting the other day!
As I write this, I am here at home during our snow day! The wind is whipping and the newscasters keep talking about a “winter-cane.” Don’t they know we have things to learn in school? That March is an important month in Kindergarten when everything that we’ve been learning all year starts to come together in a richer, deeper way?
Yesterday, we started to learn how to finger knit. I had to teach myself off of You tube, and was feeling confident enough to try to teach our class. In small groups. As a challenge by choice. It actually turned out to be a lot of fun and while there was some frustration, those who wanted to try got a chance and were surprised by their results. There is something to be said of the satisfaction of making something by hand.
And yes, I have also found the satisfaction in learning a craft this year. Knitting has become a great hobby of mine! Though as I told the kids, sometimes it can get frustrating, and when that happens, move to something else and take a break for a bit. 🙂
Here’s what we are learning this week:

Learning question words: Who, what, where, when, why, how
Sharon Hawkes reads to our class a Dr. Seuss book.
OH MY!Our 6th grade buddies are busy rehearsing for their play, “The Wizard of Oz,” which will be performed for the school on Thursday. We can’t wait! What a fun way to see our 6th grade buddies and be a part of our wonderful school community. Last week we had so much fun listening to Nahant Librarian Sharon Hawes read to our class on “Read Across America” day. What a great place to learn we have here at the Johnson School!
This week, I’m finishing report cards, which are making me so happy because I see lots of improvement! Every day in class your children surprise me with their knowledge and participation. I love this time of year when everything starts to “gel” for our little learners!
