Feel the Love February

UnknownIt’s February and in Kindergarten it is a busy month! There’s Groundhog Day, the 100th Day of School, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, Dental Health Month and a school vacation all thrown in!

I love really love February (and not just because it’s my birthday month.) February is a fun month in Kindergarten, especially with all these wonderful emergent readers and writers! Valentine’s Day provides authentic opportunities for children to practice writing for meaning and reading for meaning. 100th Day gives children a chance to practice working with big numbers.  We have been practicing our counting every day in many different ways – using base ten blocks, popsicle sticks, unifix cubes and with ten-frames.  We also have lots of fun with groundhogs, seasonal changes and how to keep our teeth healthy.

In February, we are focusing on our social and emotional learning. Did you know, Massachusetts just created Social Emotional and Approaches to Play Standards for Pre-School and Kindergarten? This Kindergarten teacher is SUPER excited about this. These are important skills that help to create successful students in the future. We are working this month on empathy, being kind to one another and solving our problems peacefully. In January, we focused on whether problems are a “big deal or a little deal?” This is also in preparation for an all-school event that will be happening in March. Stay tuned!

I hope everyone enjoyed the snow day on Friday…we’ll be watching the weather this week, looks like more snow!

Ms. Purdin 🙂
