Wonderful Words and Nifty Numbers

photo-12We are engaging more and more each day in our academic quests. We have been creating many class books out of songs and shared experiences we have had together so far.  These books are texts the  children can read when they have free time in the classroom. The class books are favorites because, well, they are books all about their favorite subject – themselves! 🙂

We have also been playing around with numbers. Today we explored all the different ways we could use six popsicle sticks. The kiddos came up with some pretty cool arrangements!

The children also explored with the idea of a growing pattern. They had to create a “staircase” as one described it, up to ten unifix cubes. Most children were able to do this and see the “next” in the pattern. This is a great skill to practice at home with blocks or legos!

We have rescheduled the field trip for Tuesday, Oct. 6!

Guided Discovery of Pattern Blocks

This afternoon we had a Guided Discovery of pattern blocks. Guided Discovery is a Responsive Classroom procedure that teaches children how to use and work with classroom materials. Other guided discoveries we have had so far are pencils and crayons. Between taking water breaks to stay cool today, the kindergarten students made some great “discoveries”!

Here’s a sampling…
